Make sure it switches channels. If it doesnt have a footswitch you can always get a midi switcher. If you buy one do a re-tube. This amp loves good preamps and for the sake of longevity get matched quads for the power tube. But that goes without saying on any amp you buy. This amp tends to get a bad rap that I think is unfounded. I had a LM and my current blue 6100 at the same time and never had a problem. Its an old amp. But if the tolex and chassis are in good shape and the pots arent scratchy then you probably found one that was taken care of.

I dont bias my own amps. So I cant answer that. But there are a few 6100 owners here who can.

They are similar to many Marshall tones. JTM45 for the cleans. They do a very good 800. Real damn close to be honest. And so much in between. When I bought mine it had that Def Lep tone to it. But it didnt take long to roll into a Scorpions tone. Slam it with a OD on the clean and its like a extra unique channel. And active p'ups sound great thru it. I really like the clean channel. Its very good. Its almost like the possibilities are limitless with this amp of what you can do. The 3 amps in my sig are share one thing in common. They blow all the other amps away that I have owned. DSL, TSL and Mesa to name a few. The 6100 is the 1st amp that I owned that I said "this is it!"

Biasing the amp the traditional way on this amp involves a little bit of work, it is not as easy as the DSl or MA series. Marshall has a procedure that is easy, but tech don't seem to trust it. There is a test point on the board, and a trimpot. According to the schematic, you need to read -50v on the pin. But Marshall doesn't tell us what that relates to in terms of current through each tube. And as others have stated, make sure it switches channels. If the midi circuit is bad, the amp is a bear to fix. But it is rare to have a problem with them.

I heard some guy comparing a JCM 800 master amp to a 6100 and they were not very similar in tone. The 6100 sounded thinner and fizzyer. I think it like most Marshalls only can sound like the model it is.

This vid demonstrate how close the 6100 comes to a 800. There is a difference as this guy points out. I think the 6100 sounds better. To me the 6100 sounds more dynamic. Not fizzy

This is a perfect example of "getting the xxxx tone" and actually having it.
How many different amps all claim to be able to sound like a Non Master Volume Lead/Super Lead Marshall? I think it is that same for the original Master Volume series amps. The newer designs "get you in the neighborhood" but your still not living in the house.

For me its simple. If you want the dead on 800 tone, buy a 800. If you want to get close to it but want greater versatility then you get (in this case) a 6100. Sure the 6100 cant do a dead on 800. But the 800 cant do everything a 6100 can. There always has to be a trade off.

Exactly. Fellas still get their panties in a bunch when I say I would rather have the options available on me DSL and get 2204ish crunch then to have another 2203/4 and be on the hunt for a super clean amp and a ...

Sorry if we are promoting G.A.S. The 6100 is a great amp. Its a amp that got very little coverage but does so many things well.

OK.. I've had a few sessions with the 6100LM and I have a few questions..

What do the buttons on the crunch channel do? I'm a but confused...
IE"...

first one in second out = ?
second one in first one out=?
both out =?
both in =?

Can the midi port be used to switch the loop on or off?
It would appear that these things have a TON of bass on tap..
What are some good settings for the three channels?

It also seems that they like to have some volume (maybe even more so that the dsl/tsl/line)....
Is that true?

What preamp tube does what? ie: If I have some high end cork sniffer tubes whre should I put em' ?

Thanks for all of your answers BTW.. I am pleased so far, It's an orgaic amp and I miss that.

Ill answer this one at a time. Im a bit behind getting to other things so Ill answer as time permits.

Google "Marshall 6100 manual pdf" this will allow you to download the book that I have. It gives images that may help you better with your first question.
